Roof Cleaning Guide: A “How To”

Roofing Solutions of Texas Fixing Roof

Dealing with clogged gutters from Autumn leaves? What about algae, moss, or mold growth? …You love your roof, but those hideous black stains are quite the eyesore…

Never underestimate the value of a good roof cleaning. Regular maintenance should be conducted twice a year, once during Fall and once during Spring, with cleanings every year or so. However, it’s important to understand exactly how to go about cleaning so that you don’t damage your Texas roof in the process.

How To Clean Your Roof of Mold Stains

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you can certainly clean your roof on your own without hiring professionals like those at TX Roofing Solutions.

That said, always be careful when choosing to do so:

  • The best time to clean is when it’s not overly sunny, hot or dry— this will prevent the cleaning agent from drying too fast.
  • Also, make sure to wear shoes or boots with proper traction to avoid slipping. Ensure your ladder is secure (not resting on fragile gutters or uneven ground) as well.
  • Lastly, only use brushes with soft bristles— no stiff brushes or brooms— and avoid pressure washing, as this could remove granules, reducing roof longevity.

Roof Cleaning Solutions & Best Cleaner Options

Although there are many natural solutions you can find online, like those containing bleach, vinegar, and dishwasher soap, we suggest using proven “roof-friendly” agents to avoid damaging shingles.

(Read why bleach is bad and should be avoided at all costs.)

When applying the cleaning agent, start from the bottom of your roof and work your way up. This will make for easier cleaning and reduce the chance of slipping. Apply in small sections (3×10 ft.), allow to sit for 15 minutes, and then spend about 10 minutes scrubbing. Rinse with water.

Note that as you clean, you’ll find more grime collecting in your gutters. Remove what you can by hand, and then use a hose to flush the rest of the debris.

Be careful of excess cleaning agent spillage. You don’t want to damage your landscaping in the process.
